máolus: A Digital Writing Instrument Combining Chinese Heritage and Modern Technology

Introducing máolus: The Perfect Tool for Chinese Calligraphy and Painting on Tablet Computers

Recently, numerous sketching and drawing mobile apps have been launched, extending the capabilities of tablet computers into professional drawing tools. However, these tools are primarily designed to suit Western styles of sketching and painting. While there are a few mobile apps available for Chinese calligraphy practices, there are no suitable writing instruments offered for such practices. Recognizing this market opportunity, designer Ho Kan Hung, Marco developed máolus, a digital drawing instrument that caters to the unique style of Chinese calligraphy and painting.

The name máolus combines the Chinese words máo bi (Chinese brush) and stylus. In Chinese painting and calligraphy, practitioners hold the brush in a vertical gesture, with the tip always kept pointed for easier control of brush stroke width. The máolus design pays homage to this tradition, with its aluminum brush shaft and conductive rubber brush tip. The aluminum shaft offers corrosion resistance, durability, lightweight properties, and electric conductivity, making it the perfect material for the brush. The conductive rubber brush tip can be molded into various sizes and shapes, ensuring a seamless writing experience.

One unique feature of the máolus is the nylon rope at the end of the brush, reminiscent of traditional Chinese brush designs. This allows users to hook the brush onto a brush rack, just like in traditional Chinese art practices. The máolus seamlessly integrates Chinese heritage with today's technology, preserving the wisdom of the past while embracing future possibilities.

With a length of 22 cm, a shaft diameter of 9mm, and weighing approximately 150g, the máolus is designed to be ergonomic and comfortable to hold. Its sleek and modern design makes it a stylish accessory for digital artists and enthusiasts.

The máolus functions just like a traditional Chinese brush, but without the mess of cleaning the brush in traditional Chinese art practices. Users can simply launch the application on their tablet computers and directly use the máolus to write or paint on the screen, making Chinese painting or calligraphy practices much more convenient.

The máolus project was completed within a month, from conceptual stage to market and product research, structural design, and final 3D rendering. The design team, led by Ho Kan Hung, Marco, conducted secondary research on similar products in the market and focused on understanding the needs and practices of digital artists through focus groups.

The máolus design has received recognition and accolades, including the Silver A' Design Award in the Art and Stationery Supplies Design category in 2014. This award is a testament to the máolus' outstanding expertise, innovation, technical characteristics, and artistic skill. It showcases a remarkable level of excellence and introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
